Prompt Score vs Harness Score: Which One Should You Focus On?

Two complementary scores for AI practitioners. Here's when a better prompt is the answer, when a better harness is the answer, and how they multiply together.

The Short Answer

Prompt Score measures how well you phrase a single request. Harness Score measures the environment your AI is running in. You need both.

Improvement in prompt alone has a ceiling. Improvement in harness removes the ceiling entirely, because it turns a single-shot AI into an accountable agent team.

When to Prioritize Prompt

You're using ChatGPT or Claude's consumer web app for ad-hoc tasks. The chat window is the entire experience. Here, a well-structured prompt (Precision, Role, Output Format, Mission Context, Structure, Tailoring β€” our PROMPT framework) is 80% of the outcome.

There is no folder, no persistent files. Harness is not the leverage point.

When to Prioritize Harness

You're using Claude Code or running recurring AI workflows β€” weekly reports, content pipelines, research automation. Here, harness is where you spend effort.

A single Elite (85+) harness produces better output than 100 tuned one-shot prompts over a quarter β€” because the harness compounds. Each improvement to CLAUDE.md or a sub-agent file improves every future run.

How They Multiply

Great harness + bare prompt = good output. Great prompt + no harness = good output. Great harness + great prompt = exceptional output and it scales across your team.

Score both. Score your prompts with the PROMPT framework, score your setup with the HARNES framework, and ladder both up over time.
